During my Research on the Environment few days ago,I came about these salient facts:
About 1 billion people worldwide are without access to safe drinking water. Water scarcity and water-borne diseases such as diarrhea,parasites and dehydration are of the most important problems Africa is facing today. An average of 6,000 people worldwide die everyday due to these factors.
Here are Some amazing Water saving tips to help protect this precious resource.
- Shower instead of taking a bath whenever possible,and when you do bath,do not overfill it.
- Install water- saving taps and fit low-flow shower heads if there is sufficient water pressure in your area.
- Time your shower to keep it under 5mins. You will save up 3500 liters a month.
- Keep a bucket in the shower to catch water as it warms up or runs. Use this water to flush or water plants.
- Close the tap while you brush your teeth,shave,etc.
- To save water and time,consider washing your face or brushing your teeth while in the shower.
- Bathe your younger children together.
- Plug the bathtub before turning the water on,then adjust the temperature as the tub fills up.
- Fill a milk bottle with water and put it in the toilet cistern to displace some of the water used with each flush. A flush of a toilet uses 11 litres each time and a filled milk bottle will save 1 litre of water each time you flush.
- Check for leaks and if you find any,fix them immediately. A tap leaking 50 drops a minute adds up to 1838 litres a year.
- Do not leaving the tap running while you brush your teeth.
- When washing dishes by hand,don’t let the water run while rinsing. Fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water. If you observe that the rinse water is not looking clean as before,you can drain it and fill it up with a clean water.
- Soak your pots and pans instead of letting the water run while you scrape them.
- Avoid washing vegetables under running water. Use a bowl and a sieve instead and afterwards empty the water in the garden.
- Cook food in as little water as possible. This will also retain more of the nutrients.
- Save water by not using your washing machine daily with a small load of clothes. Try washing a full load everytime.
- Establish a ‘water-wise’ garden by using only,or mainly indigenous plants which do not need that much water to survive and flourish.
- Water your garden during the coolest part of the day. In the mornings and late afternoons to minimize evaporation.
- Capture rain water and re-use bath and sink water to water plants and lawns.
- Frequent watering makes your plants shallow rooted and more dependent on you for survival. Less watering will toughen the grass and your plants ,encouraging its roots to spread deeper.
- Group your plants into high or low water users so that you can design a watering pattern that is better for your plants and will prevent waste on plants that don’t need it.
- The leaves of plants and trees do not need to be watered. You can therefore focus all the water on the roots of the plants and trees to ensure that they absorb all of the water you are giving them.
- Digging a small trench around the trees in your yard will allow the water to soak instead of running off.
- Different varities of lawn grass have different water requirements. Consult your local nursery for varieties that are appropriate to your area.
- When mowing the lawn,do not cut the grass shorter than 2cm. If you do,the grass will not have enough leaf area to protect itself fom the burning effects of the sun.
