Establishing A Healthy Lifestyle

Our entire society is on overdrive. People are rushing through their lives as though the goal was to get to the end,all the while,missing the joy along the way. Happiness is a journey,not a destination. To have a full and rewarding life,we need to learn to enjoy every moment of it,not live for some far off future destination. One way to learn to slow the pace of your life inorder to fully enjoy and appreciate it is to devote some time each day in quiet reflection,prayer,and meditation. Spending time in quiet relaxation is one of the best things we can do for ourselves. Not only does it have enormous health benefits,helping to lower your heart rate and blood pressure,but it’s one of the keys to tapping into your creative potential.

Thinking about your health and fitness. What types of team members would help you become your personal best? Could a Yoga or Tai Chi teacher help you add more flexibility to your body?Would you benefit from the services of a personal trainer? When was the last time you had a physical examination? Men in particular tend to be very lax about this. Are your eating habits something that would benefit from a nutritional counselor? Could an herbologist be just what you need to help you with a specific health issue?

In your journal,identify the members of your personal health team,even if you do not presently know who they are. Just think about what kinds of specialities would help you achieve your health goals and live a healthier life,filled with an abundant energy.

How about taking time to breathe; Most people breathe in a very shallow way. There is a wonderful breathing exercise by Andrew Weil M.D,author of the New York Times best seller,Spontaneous Healing.It is taken from PranaYoga and is called the “relaxing breathe.”

Dr. Weil says, “It is the most powerful relaxation method he knows and one he teaches every patient that he works with.” Quite simply,you inhale through your nose quietly and exhale through your mouth completely inorder to empty your lungs of air.Next,inhale quietly through your nose for count of four. Hold your breath for a count of seven and exhale through your mouth for a count of eight. What is important here is not the lenght of time,but the ratio four,seven,eight for the inhalation,holding and exhalation. Of course,if you are under the care of a medical doctor,please check with them before begining this or any exercise. To reap a long term benefits of relaxing breath,do a minimum of four cycles twice a day. After a month,you can increase the number of circles to eight,but never do more than eight breathe cycles. This is a very powerfuk technique and can have a profound affects on physiology. Of course,if you become out of breathe or feel dizzy,stop immediately.
